A new poll has revealed that American voters, Democrats included, have increasingly warmed to mass deportations of illegal immigrants from the country, particularly those who have committed crimes.

A Harvard/Harris poll has found that roughly 80 percent of voters have backed “deporting immigrants who are here illegally and have committed crimes,” up five points from the 75 percent who held that view in April, when supporters described such individuals as the “worst of their worst.”

The consensus is true across political lines, with Democrats showing the sharpest shift despite the party’s strong opposition to President Trump’s nationwide illegal immigration crackdown. Democratic backing for removing criminal illegal immigrants rose from 63 percent to 71 percent, an 8-point gain in a single month. Republican support also ticked up marginally from 89 to 90 percent. Independents moved from 73 to 79 percent over the same period.

On the broader question of removing all undocumented immigrants regardless of criminal history, overall support ticked up just one point to 56 percent among all Americans. Beneath that figure, however, party-level trends are more divided. Democratic support climbed four points from 33 to 37 percent. With independents, the view rose from 49 to 53 percent. Notably, Republican enthusiasm for a mass deportation policy has dropped from 80 to 77 percent.

The Harvard/Harris poll, conducted on behalf of Harvard University’s Center for American Political Studies, gathered responses from 1,725 registered voters on May 29 and 30, with a margin of error of +/-2.4 points.

These findings come after the Department of Homeland Security disclosed last month that more than 3 million illegal aliens have left the US or been deported since President Trump returned to office. Of that total, approximately 2.2 million chose to leave voluntarily through a government program offering a cash stipend and a complimentary flight home via a DHS app.
