Firebrand Conservative Keiko Fujimori Wins Peru Presidency After Razor-Thin Victory Over Leftist Rival

Conservative candidate Keiko Fujimori has won Peru’s presidential election, defeating left-wing challenger Roberto Sánchez in one of the closest races in the country’s modern history.
With more than 98 percent of ballots counted, Fujimori secured approximately 50.002 percent of the vote, edging Sánchez by only a few hundred votes out of nearly 20 million cast.
Election observers and polling experts say the remaining ballots are expected to preserve her narrow lead.
The victory marks a major political comeback for Fujimori, 51, who lost three previous presidential bids and has spent two decades building the political movement founded by her father, former President Alberto Fujimori.

Fujimori campaigned on restoring law and order, boosting economic growth, and confronting the wave of violent crime that had gripped Peru in recent years.
During the campaign, she pledged to crack down on organized crime, expand prison capacity, combat drug trafficking, and strengthen border enforcement.
“Justice won’t be afraid,” Fujimori said on the campaign trail. “The most important thing is to have the will to use force to be able to confront criminals, these scum who are killing us.”
Her victory comes amid a broader shift toward conservative governments across Latin America, as voters increasingly reject the failures of left-wing governance.

Supporters credit the Fujimori movement with rescuing Peru from economic collapse and defeating the brutal Shining Path insurgency during the 1990s.
Her father remains a highly influential figure among many Peruvians who remember that era as one of restored stability after years of terrorism and hyperinflation.
Sánchez has not conceded defeat, and some of his allies have alleged electoral irregularities without presenting evidence.
The leftist candidate insisted he would defend what he described as a “popular victory.”
Fujimori will take office facing significant challenges, including rising crime, political fragmentation, and a decade of instability that has seen multiple presidents.

Her victory is being celebrated by business leaders, who argue it will bring more prosperity to the country of some 34 million people.
“Her father was a great leader, and she has a coherent team that can pull the country out of the mess we’re in,” businessman Carlos Sigüeñas told The Wall Street Journal.
“Security will improve, there will be better jobs, more investment.”
