Oklahoma high school Principal Kirk Moore was shot in the leg while single-handedly tackling and disarming a former student armed with two semiautomatic handguns who had entered the school lobby intent on carrying out a Columbine-style mass shooting, and just 11 days later, his grateful students crowned him Prom King.

The incident took place on April 7 at Pauls Valley High School, about 60 miles south of Oklahoma City.

Surveillance video released by law enforcement shows 20-year-old former student Victor Lee Hawkins walking into the school lobby around 2:21 p.m., pointing guns at students, and ordering everyone to the ground.

One weapon jammed on his first attempt to shoot a student. He fired at another but missed.

Principal Moore, 60, rushed out of his office, fearlessly charged the gunman, face to face, and tackled him onto a bench against the wall.

During the struggle, Hawkins shot Moore in the leg.

Despite being shot, Moore still held Hawkins down until an assistant principal and staff could assist in disarming him and securing the scene.

No students or other staff were injured thanks to his bravery.

There is no way of knowing how many lives Moore saved that day with his heroic and selfless actions.

Pauls Valley Police Chief Don May praised Moore’s actions in a statement, saying, “It doesn’t surprise me the actions that he took, but it is amazing, the actions that he took. There’s not a doubt in my mind that he saved kids’ lives.”

Hawkins was arrested on the scene and booked into the Garvin County Jail. He faces charges including shooting with intent to kill, pointing a firearm, and unlawful carry of a weapon. He is being held on a $1 million bond.

Court documents state Hawkins admitted he planned to kill students, faculty, including Moore, whom he specifically disliked, and then himself in a massacre modeled after Columbine.

Moore was hospitalized and released a few days later.

He has been recovering at home but made a surprise appearance at the school’s senior prom on Friday night.

Video from the prom shows Moore entering the venue to thunderous applause and high-fives from students. He was crowned Prom King to the song “Hero” by Nickelback as the crowd cheered.

Moore has said he is “healthy and recovering” and looks forward to returning to work soon.

Moore released a statement thanking the community, “Like so many educators around the country, we prepare for these events through training and careful assessment of the threats. I am grateful that my instincts and training, as well as God’s hand, were available to me on Tuesday.”

Hawkins is scheduled to appear in court again on May 8.
