Multiple students were injured in a school shooting early Sunday morning near the University of Iowa campus following a large fight.

Officers responded to reports of a fight at the pedestrian mall in Iowa City at around 1:45 am. Upon arriving, they heard gunshots and encountered the scene where dozens of people were gathered around a fight involving multiple men throwing punches. When the gunfire rang out, the bystanders were seen fleeing the area.

“At this time, multiple victims have been taken to area hospitals to be treated for wounds suffered in the shooting,” police said in a statement. 

University of Iowa President Barb Wilson confirmed that three students were among those injured. The university issued a “Hawk Alert” early Sunday morning, warning of gunshots in the area.

“I am writing to you with a heavy heart. Early today, a shooting in downtown Iowa City injured three University of Iowa students. Iowa City Police are investigating, with the full support of University of Iowa Police,” Wilson wrote. “The university is in close communication with local law enforcement and will share more information as we are able. For now, I encourage you to rely on official university communications for updates.”

“This is a difficult moment for our community. We will get through it together by caring for one another and by holding close what it means to be part of this community,” the statement added.

No arrests had been made as of Sunday, according to the New York Post. Iowa City police opened an investigation into the incident, asking witnesses to come forward with information. Iowa City Area Crim Stoppers is offering a $1,000 reward for information leading to an arrest.
