A large Iranian-flagged cargo ship was intercepted by the US Navy in the Gulf of Oman on Thursday, with the vessel later placed under US custody following a confrontation at sea.

The ship, identified as the TOUSKA, was traveling through the region when it was stopped by the US Navy guided-missile destroyer USS Spruance. According to a statement from President Donald Trump to Truth Social, the vessel attempted to continue its course despite warnings from US forces.

“Today, an Iranian-flagged cargo ship named TOUSKA, nearly 900 feet long and weighing almost as much as an aircraft carrier, tried to get past our Naval Blockade, and it did not go well for them,” the statement read.

The statement said the USS Spruance intercepted the ship and issued a warning before the situation escalated. “The Iranian crew refused to listen, so our Navy ship stopped them right in their tracks by blowing a hole in the engine room,” it said.

Following the incident, the vessel was brought under control, with US Marines taking custody of the ship, according to the same statement. The ship is reportedly under US Treasury sanctions due to prior alleged illegal activity.

“We have full custody of the ship, and are seeing what’s on board!” the statement added.

Details on potential cargo, damage assessments, and crew status have not been independently confirmed at this time.
