White House signals it’s open to a working relationship with Anthropic despite Pentagon fight

The White House signaled Friday that it was open to a working relationship with the artificial intelligence company Anthropic after staffers held a meeting with the company’s CEO and despite the company’s battle with the Pentagon.
The White House said the meeting between Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, White House chief of staff Susie Wiles and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent was “both productive and constructive.”
“We discussed opportunities for collaboration, as well as shared approaches and protocols to address the challenges associated with scaling this technology,” the White House told The Hill. “The conversation also explored the balance between advancing innovation and ensuring safety. We look forward to continuing this dialogue and will host similar discussions with other leading AI companies.”
A spokesperson for Anthropic also confirmed Amodei’s meeting with the White House could lead to a working relationship, stating the CEO had a “productive discussion on how Anthropic and the U.S. government can work together on key shared priorities such as cybersecurity, America’s lead in the AI race, and AI safety.”
The Trump administration previously indicated that it would not be working with Anthropic because it was considered “woke” AI, and the Treasury and Defense Departments previously began offloading the company’s AI, Claude, before the company sued the administration.
The Trump administration has also argued that Anthropic’s “safeguards” pose a national security threat through industry intervening during military operations, though the company has denied the allegations.
