Trump says WHCD shooting shows need for White House ballroom

President Donald Trump renewed his call for a new White House ballroom following the shooting at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner on Saturday night.
Trump posted about the incident and the proposed construction on Truth Social Sunday morning.
“What happened last night is exactly the reason that our great Military, Secret Service, Law Enforcement and, for different reasons, every President for the last 150 years, have been DEMANDING that a large, safe, and secure Ballroom be built ON THE GROUNDS OF THE WHITE HOUSE,” Trump wrote. “This event would never have happened with the Militarily Top Secret Ballroom currently under construction at the White House. It cannot be built fast enough! While beautiful, it has every highest level security feature there is plus, there are no rooms sitting on top for unsecured people to pour in, and is inside the gates of the most secure building in the World, The White House. The ridiculous Ballroom lawsuit, brought by a woman walking her dog, who has absolutely No Standing to bring such a suit, must be dropped, immediately. Nothing should be allowed to interfere with its construction, which is on budget and substantially ahead of schedule!!!”
The proposed ballroom, estimated at about $400 million and expected to be funded through private donations, has drawn political and legal controversy. Democrats have largely criticized the project, while legal challenges have sought to block construction entirely.
Supporters of the proposal pointed to Saturday’s incident as justification for the project. Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry wrote on X, “Unfortunately, the First Lady and I had to be evacuated from the White House Correspondents’ Dinner alongside the President and the entire cabinet. This event is yet another reason that President @realDonaldTrump’s ballroom should be built!”
Human Events Daily host Jack Posobiec also voiced support, writing, “Thank God President Trump is building a ballroom at the White House.”
Some Democrats even expressed support. Senator John Fetterman wrote, “We were there front and center. That venue wasn’t built to accommodate an event with the line of succession for the U.S. government. After witnessing last night, drop the TDS and build the White House ballroom for events exactly like these.”
The Legal battles over the project are ongoing. On April 16, a federal judge issued an order largely blocking above-ground construction. However, underground work related to national security facilities was allowed to continue, along with limited above-ground work deemed “strictly necessary to cover, secure, and protect such national security facilities.” An appeals court later issued a temporary hold on that order and scheduled a June 5 hearing to review the case.
