A new survey has found that the average American would be willing to sacrifice a large portion of their income in exchange for financial security and peace of mind amid ongoing economic uncertainty.

The survey, conducted by Talker Research and polling 2,000 US adults, found the average respondent, earning approximately $79,000 annually, would be willing to give up about $57,000 each year to feel financially secure and at peace. Among respondents’ top concerns was being able to consistently afford everyday necessities such as groceries and medication. Americans surveyed said they would pay an average of $21,000 annually for the reassurance of always being able to cover those costs.

The second-highest priority was job security, with respondents saying they would pay roughly $19,800 annually to never have to worry about losing their job. The third major concern was not having to worry about unexpected healthcare bills, with respondents saying they would spend an average of $16,400 per year to avoid surprise bills or expensive copays.

“We exist in an environment defined by economic uncertainty and political instability,” said Dr. Jenny Martin, a psychologist and the founder of Gemstone Wellness, according to Study Finds. “Peace of mind has become psychologically equated with control, which feels harder and harder to find.”

The survey also found that 47 percent of respondents would prefer to pay for peace of mind, while 41 percent said they could not afford to do so even if they wanted to. A separate Talker Research survey found the average American spends nearly half of their monthly paycheck within the first two days of receiving it, leaving the remaining income to cover all other expenses for the rest of the month.

“When core needs such as healthcare, employment or transportation feel unpredictable, the nervous system remains in a state of threat,” Martin said. “The idea of ‘paying for peace of mind’ reflects a deeper desire to secure safety and predictability — relief from chronic vigilance.”
