Two people were injured by the blast.

The island country of Malta was shaken today (1) by a massive explosion.

A fireworks factory caught fire and exploded, sending a ‘massive plume of smoke and debris into the air’.

Euronews reported:

“Prime Minister Robert Abela wrote on social media that his ‘thoughts are with the people affected by the explosion that occurred this morning’.

[…] The blast and subsequent explosions at the Ta’ Lourdes fireworks factory on the north side of the Mediterranean island shook buildings and shattered glass, according to videos posted by local newspapers the Times of Malta and Malta Today.”

A first explosion took place at 6:35am, and was followed by a second, much more powerful one.

“Two men who suffered minor injuries had been working in nearby fields when the explosions happened, police said on social media.

No workers were at the factory at the time, they said. Other small explosions went off even hours after the first ones, according to the Times of Malta.”

Times of Malta reported:

“The blast at the Lourdes Fireworks Factory on Triq il-Qadi damaged many properties in the area, but the police said all people who work on site and neighbors were accounted for.

Two men, aged 47 and 67, who tilled nearby fields were hospitalized and treated for shock and slight injuries. A number of farm animals are believed to have been killed.

[…] People reported feeling the impact in the center and north of the country.”
