Former President Donald Trump and Melania Trump greet King Charles III and Camilla at the White House, surrounded by U.S. flags and military honor guards.

Trump and the King will celebrate the past while looking to the future.

After months of uncertainty, the visit by British King Charles III to the United States kicked off yesterday with calls for unity.

Donald and Melania Trump welcomed the King and Queen Camilla to the White House as they started their four-day state visit marking the 250th anniversary of America’s independence.

As the two couples stood for pictures, Trump pointed out in the distance to the tree planted by Charles’ mother, Elizabeth II, during her visit in 1991 – it is a fitting symbol for a relationship that is a living thing, growing and evolving with the seasons.

After a private afternoon tea, Trump gave the King a tour of the White House gardens, including a visit to the beehives.

Another symbolic moment, this time looking to the future, was held when they met the organizers of a time capsule created to mark America’s 250th anniversary.

Charles and Camilla placed a commemorative coin made by the Royal Mint into the capsule, along with a proclamation from the King.

The Telegraph reported:

“The King will call on the United States and Britain to ‘come together’ even when they do not agree, in a speech to Congress today.”

The King will stress that the US-UK transatlantic friendship ‘does not just benefit the two countries, but the world’.

The 20-minute speech is expected to include references to Ukraine, the Middle East, Nato and the AUKUS defense pact between the US, UK and Australia.

“It is the more political of the two speeches the King will deliver in the US, written to reflect the priorities of the Government in the King’s own language, and is ostensibly about the 250th anniversary of America’s independence from Britain.

The main theme, it is understood, is a reflection on history, including the moments that the two countries have disagreed. But – the King will say – the foundations of their ‘democratic, legal and social traditions’ are such that ‘time and again, our two countries have always found ways to come together’.”
