Democrat Senate candidate in Texas James Talarico has said that it is because of his faith that he supports women getting abortions and that the Bible is “silent” about the issue.

He made the comments while speaking to Jamie Kern Lima on her podcast. “I trust Texas women to make decisions about their own bodies, shape their own destinies in consultation with their family members, their doctors, their faith leaders. Don’t believe that’s a place for government,” Talarico said.

“I don’t believe it’s a place for the state, and that’s a belief I hold, not despite my faith, but because of my faith. Jesus never talks about abortion. The Bible is silent on abortion, and when that happens with a social issue as important as abortion, we Christians have to take scripture as a whole, and we’ve got to try to make some kind of ethical determination,” Talarico added.

The Democrat who claims to hold to Biblical principles said that Texas has the “most extreme abortion ban in the country,” and then claimed that a 10-year-old girl would not be able to access an abortion if she was raped. Under Texas law, there are exceptions for abortion if a doctor determines that the life or health of a patient is at risk.

“It’s my personal belief that we have to give women and girls the freedom to make this decision as moral agents as our sisters in Christ,” Talarico added.

Although abortion is not mentioned in the Bible, Jeremiah 1:5 states, “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you: Before you were born I sanctified you.” Psalms 139: 13 states, “For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb.”

In the Bible, when the pregnant Mary visits her pregnant cousin Elizabeth in the gospel of Luke, John the Baptist leaps for joy in recognition of the Christ.

Talarico does not believe that these verses from the Bible have anything to do with abortion apparently.

Talarico was nominated as the Democratic candidate for the Senate race in Texas and was able to best Jasmine Crockett in March. He will run against either incumbent GOP Texas Senator John Cornyn or challenger Ken Paxton in the 2026 midterm elections.
