A father of seven has died following a shooting that took place in Philadelphia’s Germantown neighborhood on Wednesday evening after a fight broke out over a parking space. 

Police said the shooting took place around 7:23 pm on Wednesday, with officers being called to the 6100 block of Magnolia Street in Germantown. Upon arriving at the scene, officers found a 52-year-old man suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest. Family members identified the man as Jerry Fulton. Fulton was taken to a nearby hospital and was pronounced dead just before 7:50 pm, per NBC 10.

Officials said a 26-year-old man, later identified as Neiko Nichols of Philadelphia, was taken into custody at the scene. Nichols has been charged with murder, possessing instruments of crime and recklessly endangering another person. 

Fulton’s family told the outlet that the father had been visiting a friend on the block and got into an argument with another person over a parking spot. Fulton was shot in the back as he walked away, his family said. 

One of Fulton’s sons, Chad Andrews-Fulton, said, “We all gotta grieve over something that could be avoided. It’s a parking spot. We’re just trying to get together as a family and trying to get through this time together. We got a lot of trust in God.”

Another one of Fulton’s sons, Jerry Andrews-Fulton, said he had been near the scene when he heard gunshots ring out. “I heard a gunshot, on the phone with my mom and I said ‘Somebody must’ve got shot.’ I came over here. I lost my mind. I seen him in the back of a car. Nobody near him, nobody touch him, nobody checking his pulse.” Jerry believes that a delay in medical care contributed to his father’s death.
