Henrilynn Ibezim tried to give himself a boost during the 2021 Mayoral primary in Plainfield, New Jersey but attempting to turn in forged voter registration applications.
He brought the falsified registrations to a post office in Elizabeth, New Jersey, in a garbage bag and were allegedly completed without the authorization of the individuals whose names appeared on them.
In 2024, a New Jersey state grand jury indicted him on eight counts related to an alleged voter fraud scheme during the June 2021 Democratic primary including:
- :Election fraud (2nd degree)
- Trafficking in personal identifying information (2nd degree)
- Criminal attempt to commit false registration or transfer (3rd degree)
- Tampering with public records or information (3rd degree)
- Forgery (3rd degree)
- Hindering apprehension or prosecution (3rd degree)
- Tampering with witnesses and informants (3rd degree)
On Thursday, in a plea deal, Ibezim pleaded guilty to forging the nearly 1,000 voter registration applications.
Accrording to Fox News, the handwriting on the 1,000 applications was matched to only three of four people and “none of the slips were marked as completed by somebody other than the voter whom they were supposed to represent.”
The attorney general’s office also said Ibezim attempted to coach a witness who helped him fill out the applications if confronted by law enforcement and not to “admit anything.”
Ibezim pleaded guilty to one count of third-degree forgery Monday as part of a plea agreement with the attorney general’s office. He had originally been charged with eight counts of various criminal offenses, including election fraud and witness tampering, but those charges were dropped as part of the plea agreement.
Prosecutors will recommend that Ibezim serve probation as punishment, according to the statement. He is due for sentencing in June.
“My office is determined to ensure elections are fair and that their outcomes are determined by the will of the voters,” Attorney General Jennifer Davenport said in a statement.
Ultimately Ibezim, who ran on the Unity Party ticket, received only 103 votes in the primary.
