Ted Turner, the liberal billionaire who founded CNN, has died.

A News release from Turner Enterprises exclusively revealed that Turner passed away today at the age of 87.

Mark Thompson, Chairman and CEO of CNN Worldwide, released the following statement:

Ted was an intensely involved and committed leader, intrepid, fearless and always willing to back a hunch and trust his own judgement.

He was and always will be the presiding spirit of CNN. Ted is the giant on whose shoulders we stand, and we will all take a moment today to recognize him and his impact on our lives and the world.

In addition to founding CNN, Turner was also a prominent philnathropist

As CNN notes, Turner revealed in 2018 that he had Lewy body dementia, a progressive brain disorder. Turner was also hospitalized early last year with pneumonia before recovering at a rehabilitation facility.

Turner is survived by his five children, 14 grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
