Children born to illegal immigrant parents in the US were nearly 10 percent of all new births in the US in 2023, according to new data. The figures were published about data that came during the Biden administration, which had lax border policies.

New data released by Pew Research shows that 9 percent of all US births in 2023 were to those who were here in the US illegally, or in the country temporarily. The Supreme Court is currently considering the legality of an order from President Donald Trump that would restrict birthright citizenship from some of those born to foreign nationals in the US.

Of the 3.6 million babies born that year, 320,000 were born to those illegally in the US or here on a temporary basis. Of those 320,000 that were born, 245,000 were born to illegal immigrant parents.

Around 15,000 were born to mothers with temporary legal status in the US. The other 60,000 were born to illegal immigrant mothers who had a father who is a citizen in the US or a permanent lawful resident. The number of babies born to illegal immigrants in 2023 was the highest total since 2010.

Some have warned that birthright citizenship, as it has been carried out legally, is leaving the US open to threats, such as Chinese foreign nationals having their babies in the US so that the child can then be raised in China as a US citizen and go back to the US on behalf of the CCP.

Additionally, some immigration hawks have said that the US welfare system can be abused by those in the country illegally, with babies born as US citizens.

On April 1, a hearing for Trump v. Barbara started in the Supreme Court, which may turn out to be a landmark ruling in response to Trump’s order restricting birthright citizenship.
