Alina Fernández, daughter of Cuban revolutionary leader Fidel Castro, addressed long-running speculation about a possible close link to former Canadian prime minister Justin Trudeau during an interview with journalist Katie Pavlich.

The claims have circulated for years as rumors persist that Trudeau, whose photos have been compared to a young Fidel’s, could be Fernández’s half-brother. The allegation comes from the repeated visits of Trudeau’s mother, Margaret Trudeau, in Cuba during the 1970s. The Trudeau matriarch has her own history of alleged infidelity that theorists also point to as evidence.

During the interview, Pavlich raised the rumor directly. “For years, we’ve heard rumors that Justin Trudeau, the former prime minister of Canada, could be your half-brother. What do you think of that?”

Fernández did not directly deny the claim, instead referencing Trudeau’s mother’s visits to Cuba. “Uh, the only thing I can say is that his mother used to visit the country very often.” Pavlich responded by suggesting the comment left room for interpretation. “Well, that might be a tell then. I guess, that’s a half answer.” to which she responded, “Yeah!”

Pavlich then asked whether Fernández intended to contact Trudeau to clarify the matter. “Do you plan to call him and maybe find out?”

“No, no. Uh, I won’t do it. If he wants, he’s going to be welcome, but I won’t. I won’t,” she responded, “I think he keeps that to himself and you have to respect that.”
