Speaking at Tuesday’s Cannes Film Festival jury press conference, actress Demi Moore said that Hollywood should “find ways” to work with AI, declaring that “AI is here.”

Moore, a member of the film festival’s jury, was asked by Variety at the press conference how she feels AI is impacting the movie industry, and whether there should be more regulation on its use. She replied, “Wow, that’s a big question. I think the reality is that to resist—I always feel that against-ness breeds against-ness. AI is here. And so to fight it is to fight something that is a battle that we will lose. So to find ways in which we can work with it, I think, is a more valuable path to take.”

“To your question of, are we doing enough to protect ourselves? I don’t know the answer to that. And so my inclination would be to say probably not,” she added.

She said that there “really isn’t anything to fear” with regard to AI “because what it can never replace is what true art comes from, which is not the physical, it comes from the soul.” She added, “It comes from the spirit of each and every one of us sitting here, to each and every one of us who creates every day. And that they can never recreate through something that is technical.”

The use of AI in Hollywood films is spreading. After his 2025 death, the late actor Val Kilmer is set to appear in the upcoming film “As Deep in the Grave” through the use of generative AI. He had been cast for the role of a Catholic priest in the film prior to his death.

Writer and director Coerte Voorhees said, “His family kept saying how important they thought the movie was and that Val really wanted to be a part of this. He really thought it was an important story that he wanted his name on. It was that support that gave me the confidence to say, okay let’s do this. Despite the fact some people might call it controversial, this is what Val wanted.”

In rules unveiled earlier in May for the 99th Oscars, which will take place in 2027, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences addressed the use of AI in films. For the acting category, “only roles credited in the film’s legal billing and demonstrably performed by humans with their consent will be considered eligible,” the rules state. In writing categories, screenplays “must be human-authored” to be considered. The rules also state, “Under Eligibility (Rule Two) regarding Generative Artificial Intelligence, the Academy reserves the right to request more information about the nature of the use and human authorship.”
