A Democrat State Senate candidate in Indiana was busted by police after apparently being unable to keep his nose clean while campaigning.

As WTHR reported, The Fishers Police Department received a call on April 26 regarding a man who was soliciting a neighborhood in the 13000 block of Ravenswood Trail, around 8 p.m.

Once police officers arrived, they found 39-year-old Andrew Dezelan in his vehicle at the neighborhood’s clubhouse.

When officers asked Dezelan why he was in the neighborhood, he could not provide a clear answer. But he did say he received permission from HOA board member.

FOX 59 reports that Dezelan posted multiple times to his social media accounts that he was canvassing the neighborhood as part of his election efforts.

Court documents obtained by WTHR reveal that Dezelan was speaking rapidly and making very quick, nervous and unorganized movements. Moreover, he was sweating and his pupils were “pinpoint.”

The court documents note that these are signs of someone under the influence.

After a responding officer requested ID from Dezelan, he claimed that he needed to leave and slammed his vehicle in reverse.

Here’s what happened next, according to WTHR:

According to court documents, the responding officer told Dezelan to stop and get out of his vehicle, and then, the officer opened the door and grabbed Dezelan’s left wrist.

Court documents say Dezelan continued “frantically moving around,” placing one leg out of the vehicle like he was going to get out before putting it back inside the vehicle.

The responding officer ultimately pulled Dezelan out of the vehicle to place him in handcuffs.

Dezelan resisted being put in handcuffs several times before finally complying.

WTHR reports that when cops searched the Democrat’s vehicle, they found a small bag of cocaine. He was subsequently arrested and charged with possession of the drug and resisting law enforcement.

Current Publishing LLC notes that Dezelan has a similar pending cocaine charge in Wisconsin, as well as two more pending charges in that state for allegedly operating while intoxicated.

Despite this, a judge set bail for Dezelan at $10,000 on April 27 for the alleged crime in Fishers, which the Democrat posted that same day.

This arrest comes at an inopportune time for Indiana Democrats. Fox 59 notes that Dezelan is one of four candidates vying for the Democratic nomination in Senate District 31 in the upcoming primary elections on May 5.

The district considered a prime target for Democrats after Republican incumbent State Senator Kyle Walker elected not to run again.
