Treasury pushing for Trump $250 bill: Report

Trump administration officials in the Treasury Department are pushing for the creation of a $250 bill featuring President Donald Trump, the Washington Post reported, citing “four current and former employees.”
Federal law currently bars living people from appearing on currency. Trump’s appearance on currency, whether post-mortem or otherwise, would not be entirely out of precedent. The U.S. has long honored presidents on a dollar coin series and President John F. Kennedy is still on the rarely-used half-dollar.
The Post reported that U.S. Treasurer Brandon Beach and his senior adviser, Mike Brown, began pushing the Bureau of Engraving and Printing to create prototypes of the $250 bill, though it will almost certainly not come to fruition in time for the July 4, 2026 anniversary of the nation’s founding.
In 2025, lawmakers introduced a bill to allow Trump to appear on currency for the 250th anniversary, but Congress did not pass it. Though he likely won’t appear on currency in his own lifetime, nothing bars the appearance of a former president on currency once they have died and all former presidents, save Trump, Jimmy Carter, Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, and Barack Obama, have appeared as part of the dollar coin series. Carter died in 2024.
