A disturbing assault in Jersey City is drawing attention online where six victims suffered chemical burns after what is believed to be sulfuric acid was thrown on them.

The incident reportedly involved two juveniles who rode past a group of six women and girls before throwing a substance believed to be sulfuric acid at them and fleeing the scene.

The incident took place on Wilkinson Avenue near Ocean Avenue at around 7:40 pm on Monday, per ABC 7.

Three of the victims were teenagers, and one girl suffered second-degree burns to her face and scalp and was transported to a burn unit for treatment. Witness accounts describe victims “screaming in pain” immediately after contact with the substance. The alleged attack is said to have followed an earlier dispute, with the suspects targeting the group shortly afterward. Police have arrested one juvenile while a second suspect remains at large.

A neighbor reported that she heard one of the girls screaming: “It burns, it burns!'”

A witness named Aaron told reporters, “The people that were hurt, they had the towels on their face, and they went into the ambulance.”

He later continued, “You know, we’ve been living on this block for a long time and this is one of the most crazy things we’ve seen,” he continued. First responders were spotted washing down surfaces, sparking concern in the community. Authorities have not released the identities of the suspects due to their age, and that the incident is being treated as targeted.
