Another day, another socialist scandal in Spain.

The blows keep on coming for embattled Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, with corruption scandals and prosecutions involving his brother, multiple key allies from his inner circle… and his wife.

A judge has ordered Begoña Gómez, the wife of Sánchez, to stand trial for corruption and also barred her from leaving Spain.

The Telegraph reported:

“Judge Juan Carlos Peinado ordered Ms. Gómez to surrender her passport and appear before the court twice a month until a verdict is reached, according to a court order released Saturday.

The court said it would issue instructions to border crossings and civilian and military airports to ensure Ms. Gómez complies with the ban on leaving the country.”

So far, no date has been set for the politically explosive trial.

“Gómez, 55, is accused of exploiting her relationship to advance her professional career by securing a position at Madrid’s prestigious Complutense University, where she directed a master’s degree course in business studies. She is also accused of using public resources to advance private interests.

In April, following a two-year criminal investigation, Judge Peinado formally charged her with embezzlement, influence peddling, corruption in business dealings and misappropriation of funds.”

Reuters reported:

“The case is ​one of several corruption probes nearing or already at trial that are weighing on Sanchez, one of Europe’s few remaining leftist leaders. He has not ​been named in any of the cases and has said ​they are part of a campaign to remove him from office.

The Socialist ‌party ⁠quickly reacted to the judge’s ruling, posting on social media X: ‘(Begoña) has been subjected to judicial and political persecution for two years. Today’s development is another step in that process.’

Several close ​allies, including the ​Socialist party’s number ⁠three and Sanchez’s former transport minister, are under investigation in cases involving alleged kickbacks linked ​to public works, oil and gas contracts, and ​the procurement ⁠of masks during the pandemic. They deny wrongdoing.”
