The deadline has approached for Rep. Ilhan Omar to produce documents demanded by the Minnesota House Fraud Prevention and State Oversight Committee regarding her connections to Somali defendants charged as part of a massive pandemic-era fraud scheme in the state.

Committee Chair Kristin Robbins issued a letter to Omar on April 22 demanding documents, with a deadline set for May 5. This came after she failed to appear before the committee to testify. Robbins told NewsNation that as of the deadline, no documents had been provided by Omar.

Among the documents requested by the committee are any communications Omar had with a number of Feeding Our Future defendants who had donated to her campaign, communications with her former staff member who pleaded guilty as part of the fraud case Guhaad Hashi Said, and communications with the convicted owners of the Safari Restaurant in Minneapolis where she frequently held events, among other things.

Robbins told NewsNation, “The fact that she ghosted us — she would not even respond to multiple inquiries to a state legislature where she used to serve. I think it shows disdain for Minnesota taxpayers that she’s unwilling to even answer these questions.”

While Minnesota lawmakers are limited in terms of enforcement authority, congressional action could be possible. The outlet reported that the House Oversight Committee could subpoena the documents requested of Omar.

Minnesota has been a focus point for fraud investigations, with many social services such as services for autistic children and meals for children being abused, grant funds taken and services not being dispensed. Dozens of people, mainly of Somali descent, have been charged or convicted in. the Feeding Our Future case alone.

In late April, the FBI and Homeland Security Investigations carried out search warrants at 22 Minnesota locations for fraud. Among those searched was the infamous “Quality Learing Center” daycare.
