House blocks Iran war powers resolution in narrow vote

The House on Thursday blocked a war powers resolution calling for an end to the conflict in Iran.

The 213-214 vote narrowly failed in the lower chamber. Had it secured passage and cleared the Senate as well, President Donald Trump was certain to veto it.

The war began in late February with joint U.S.-Israeli strikes on Iran that killed Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Despite some misgivings from libertarian lawmakers and the political left, the president does appear to enjoy the support of enough of his own party to carry on with the conflict.

The vote came the same day that Trump announced a 10-day ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon, which has been a sticking point for negotiations with Iran.
