Exclusive Interview with US Congressman Chip Roy (TX-21) — Author of SAVE America Act Urges US Senate to Pass Historic Election Integrity Legislation Through Filibuster

The Gateway Pundit conducted an exclusive interview with US Congressman Chip Roy (TX-21) on the heels of the US House of Representatives’ passage of Congressman Roy’s historic SAVE America Act.

The US House of Representatives passed the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act in February 2026, thanks to the courage of Congressman Roy and his 220 fellow Republican Congressmen.

As a result, common-sense election integrity measures such as mandatory voter ID and proof of US citizenship for voter registration now stand on the precipice of becoming federal law, contingent upon the US Senate’s passage of the SAVE America Act.

However, the Senate has stalled a vote on the SAVE America Act for over two months. Although 50 Senate Republicans are co-sponsoring the SAVE America Act, 60 ‘Yes’ votes are needed to overcome the filibuster, sending the SAVE America Act directly to President Trump’s desk.

Congressman Roy is now calling upon Senate Republicans to debate these critical election integrity measures on the Senate floor, before the American people, for as many weeks as necessary to pass the SAVE America Act into federal law.

“Republicans need to grow a backbone and realize that they can pass the Bill through the Senate by demanding people go to the floor and have to debate through a filibuster,” Congressman Chip Roy told The Gateway Pundit.

“House Republicans answered what the American people want us to do; what the President asked us to do. Citizenship and voter ID: the substance of the Bill is common sense. Now the only question is whether the Senate will deliver.”

“We’re not asking to change the Senate rules. We’re asking Senators to work. Make the Senate work again. We’re asking Republicans to go to the Senate floor, and do their job,” Congressman Roy said.

Congressman Roy represents the majority of Americans who believe Senate Democrats cannot possibly win a debate on the merits of election integrity.

“If Democrats want to talk, great. Tell the American people why you think we shouldn’t have citizen voting and voter ID. Let’s do it for a week. Then let’s do it for a second week, and a third week. We are just talking about simple, common-sense voting measures to secure our elections,” Congressman Roy said.

At the center of this debate, Democrat lawmakers remain largely antagonistic to enshrining common-sense election integrity measures into federal law, despite 83% of Americans supporting national voter ID, according to a recent CNN poll.

Notably, Senate Democrats have previously broken ranks to vote alongside Republicans on a small number of key issues during this Congressional session.

In a moment of rare congressional unity, on January 20, 2025, the Senate confirmed Marco Rubio as Secretary of State by a unanimous vote of 99-0.

On November 10, 2025, after Senate Democrats held essential US government workers’ paychecks hostage for two months during the longest-ever US government shutdown, nine Senate Democrats ultimately surrendered their position of free, government-provided health care for non-US citizens and voted to reopen the US government.

With sustained public pressure and rigorous debate in the Senate, Americans may still have the opportunity to persuade the ten Senate Democrat and Republican holdouts needed to secure passage of the SAVE Act into law.

However, based on the Democrat leadership’s tyrannical response to the significant and well-documented irregularities during the 2020 presidential election, along with their present unwillingness to signal any support for American election integrity, Democrats appear highly unlikely to compromise on this critical issue.

The fact remains that Senate Republicans hold the power to terminate the filibuster and pass the SAVE Act with only 51 votes.

President Trump actively supports the Senate’s passage of the SAVE America Act by any means necessary, frequently advocating his position on Truth Social.

Tweet by Donald Trump discussing the SAVE AMERICA ACT and its implications for the political party and Senate, emphasizing the need to terminate the filibuster.

In terms of the Senate procedure for terminating the filibuster:

  1. Once the SAVE America Act is brought to the Senate floor and filibustered, Senate Majority Leader John Thune can raise a point of order asserting that only a simple majority is required to end debate and pass the Bill.
  2. If 51 Senators vote to overturn the presiding officer’s decision that 60 votes are required to pass the SAVE America Act, the Senate establishes a new precedent allowing the SAVE America Act, and future legislation, to advance by simple majority.

The procedure is uncomplicated; the Senate must simply gather the courage to act on behalf of the American people and the sanctity of our beloved republic.
