Bitter Sen. John Cornyn Goes Crying to New York Times After Primary Defeat — Predicts Trump Will Face ‘Most Miserable Two Years of His Life’

Defeated Texas Senator John Cornyn is taking shots at President Trump after losing his Republican primary to Attorney General Ken Paxton.
In an interview with The New York Times, Cornyn predicted that the president will face “the most miserable two years of his life” if the GOP suffers setbacks in the midterm elections.
He also suggested that Senate Republicans who are retiring or were defeated in primaries will have greater freedom to oppose the White House agenda during the remainder of Trump’s term.
“I think it is going to be a pretty bumpy ride for the next seven months,” Cornyn said.
“It does give some of us a little more freedom, and certainly leverage.”

Cornyn, who was decisively defeated by Paxton despite a late effort to win Trump’s support, appeared particularly bitter about the president’s endorsement of his challenger.
“If that’s the way friends treat you, you wonder about his enemies,” Cornyn said after Trump previously described him as a friend despite backing Paxton’s campaign.
The outgoing senator also accused Trump of demanding blind loyalty from Republican lawmakers.
“There’s never going to be good enough for him, other than 100 percent, you know, slavish adherence to whatever he wants,” Cornyn said.
“But obviously that’s not what the senator’s role is supposed to be.”

Cornyn argued that Trump’s decision to endorse Paxton could ultimately hurt Republicans politically.
“It’s going to make things harder, certainly more expensive in Texas, and make it harder around the country,” he said.
“He’s going to have the most miserable two years of his life in the last two years of his term, I think, because I think November is going to be a disaster.”
Paxton defeated Cornyn after securing Trump’s endorsement, ending the longtime senator’s more than two decades in Washington.
Throughout the campaign, Cornyn repeatedly attacked Paxton and questioned his fitness for office, while Paxton successfully positioned himself as the more reliable MAGA candidate.
Despite his criticism of Trump, Cornyn argued that his voting record aligned with the president’s agenda nearly all of the time.
“I’ve always said that former senators look happier, healthier, and they’re certainly more prosperous,” Cornyn said of his impending departure from Congress.
“So, I’m kind of, like, looking forward to what comes next.”
