AOC sports hijab for Muslim holiday event with Mamdani in the Bronx

Rep Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez was seen sporting a hijab at a New York City event marking the Islamic holiday of Eid al-Adha in the Bronx alongside Muslim Mayor Zohran Mamdani.
In photos posted by Mamdani’s social media account, Ocasio-Cortez was seen wearing a red headscarf, smiling while alongside another man in traditional Islamic clothing. Mamdani is seen wearing traditional garb supporting a British soccer team.
Mamdani wrote, “Eid Mubarak! Today as we honor Prophet Ibrahim, Eid al-Adha reminds us that sacrifice is not a burden. It is an opportunity to see ourselves as part of something larger. To extend a hand to those who need it most.”
He added, “I am honored to be New York City’s first Muslim Mayor and I am determined to lead through solidarity. Together, we are working to ensure every New Yorker can afford the groceries, housing, and child care they need. Our solidarity is our strength. Eid Saeed, New York.”
Ocasio-Cortez wrote, “Wishing a joyous and blessed Eid al-Adha to all those observing today. On this special day to so many in our community, we send our warmest wishes for a wonderful time with your family. Eid Mubarak!”
Ocasio-Cortez is the latest official to be seen wearing a hijab in recent months. In March, New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill was seen sporting the head scarf while visiting a Hamas-linked Mosque in Paterson.
In December, Minnesota Lt. Governor Peggy Flanagan wore a hijab while speaking on a local Somali television station. She opened with an Islamic greeting meaning “peace be upon you,” saying “Asalamalekun.”
“My name is Peggy Flanagan,” she went on. “I am the Lieutenant Governor of Minnesota, and I’m really honored and humbled to be here with all of you today. I am incredibly clear that the Somali community is part of the fabric of the state of Minnesota.” Her television appearance came on the heels of a report from Nick Shirley uncovering fraud in Minnesota’s daycare system, many of whom were Somali.
