A 24-year-old Indian illegal alien, identified by police as Atharva Vyas, is accused of attacking a mother and attempting to bite her 3-year-old daughter’s face during a random assault at Espada Park in San Antonio, Texas, on April 18, 2026.

According to San Antonio police and the child’s mother, Gabriella Perez, Vyas allegedly emerged from a wooded area, grabbed Perez by the hair, punched her in the jaw and caused her to drop her daughter before turning on the toddler.

Witnesses and court documents state that Vyas then leapt onto the child on all fours, pinned her to the ground, jammed his thumbs toward her eyes and bit her face and mouth, an attack Perez later described as looking “like a horror movie” and “a f—— zombie movie.”

The 3-year-old girl, identified by family as Amelia, suffered deep scratches and bite wounds, lost two front teeth and faces ongoing medical treatment and emotional trauma, prompting relatives to launch an online fundraiser to cover her care.

Bystanders rushed in, punching and kicking the suspect and holding him down until officers arrived, and San Antonio Police arrested Vyas at the scene on charges including injury to a child with intent to cause bodily injury, assault causing bodily injury, aggravated assault and illegal entry.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement has lodged a detainer against Vyas after the Department of Homeland Security confirmed he is an illegal alien from India who first entered the U.S. on a student visa during the Biden era in 2023 and was previously arrested on a felony assault charge but not removed at that time.

Acting DHS Assistant Secretary Lauren Bis blasted the earlier decision not to revoke his visa, calling Vyas a “criminal illegal alien” who “brutally bit this child” and saying the “barbaric assault” in the park was “completely preventable” and that the Biden administration should never have released him after his prior arrest.

On social media platform X, an account for Homeland Security shared a graphic post calling the incident “HORRIFYING,” stating that “Illegal alien from India BRUTALLY ASSAULTS mother and BITES her 3-year-old child’s face,” a message that was widely circulated by users outraged over the attack.

Conservative commentators and alternative-media personalities went further, circulating video clips and describing Vyas as a “cannibal” who “tried to eat a toddler’s face,” using the case as proof that what they call “open borders” policies are endangering American families.

As Amelia recovers and remains too traumatized to return to daycare, local residents and online supporters are donating to the family while the case fuels a broader national debate over immigration enforcement, drug use and public safety, with the criminal investigation in San Antonio still ongoing.
