The gunman who opened fire near the White House on Saturday evening has been identified as a man named Nesire Best.
A motive is still unclear, but officials say he had a history of mental health issues.
Best was pronounced dead after the shooting at a local hospital.
NBC’s Tom Winter identified the shooter at approximately 9 pm ET:

Those officials say he has a documented history with law enforcement and prior concerns about his mental health.

Fox News reported,
During the shooting, a bystander was also struck by gunfire. Their condition is unknown.
It remains unclear whether the bystander was struck by the suspect’s initial gunfire or during the subsequent exchange of gunfire.
Officials said the suspect had a history of mental health issues.
No injuries were sustained by Secret Service personnel.
White House Spox Steven Cheung wrote in an X post following the shooting, “President Trump is working at 8:00 PM. Can’t stop, won’t stop.”

Multiple videos from the North Lawn of the White House and Pebble Beach, where members of the media film, show the chaos unfolding as Secret Service agents rushed everybody into the press briefing room.
