Former Reagan White House official Bobby Charles has won Maine’s GOP gubernatorial primary. 

The Maine Secretary of State office on Friday declared Charles the top voter-getter in the ranked-choice contest. The results came 10 days after Election Day on June 9. The race went to ranked-choice because none of the candidates reached 50% or more of the votes on election night, according to newscentermaine.com. 

Charles will now face Democratic nominee Hannah Pingree in the general election in November for the open governor’s seat. The state’s Democratic governor, Janet Mills, cannot seek reelection because of term limits.

“Bobby’s campaign embodies the issues that are at the forefront of Mainers’ minds because of the Democrats’ terrible leadership in Augusta. Maine doesn’t need another failed insider,” Charles’ campaign said after its candidate was declared the winner. 

After working in the Reagan White House from 1981 to 1983, Charles was an assistant secretary of state at the State Department.
