Sport enthusiasm has gone very wrong.

It was a warm sunny day in Southwest Germany, and people were out in force to sip their beers and watch the LVM Saarland Trofeo Juniors, a prestigious under-19 road cycling race.

Among the public, an elderly woman felt she didn’t have a good view of the race.

In the effort to get a better position, the pensioner ended up driving her mobility scooter into an oncoming peloton.

Young German racing cyclists were sent airborne, viral video from the incident shows.

The Telegraph reported:

“The spectator at the Saarland Trofeo Juniors race rolled her mobility scooter into the road just as dozens of lycra-clad cyclists sped past a crowd of onlookers standing on the pavement.

Video footage shows one rider managed to swerve around the scooter, but Paul Vriesman, a Dutch cyclist, crashed into the side of the mobility scooter, causing him to somersault into the air and land on the road.

The camera moved away before any further crashes were captured, but video of the aftermath showed a number of cyclists lying on the ground, writhing in pain. Reports later said all those involved escaped serious injury.”

Mr Vriesman wrote on Instagram: “A very nasty looking crash but it looks like I got away with it relatively well. I didn’t get to finish the race while every stage was feeling like a big step forward.”
