Frontman Chris Robinson confronted audience members during a Black Crowes performance in Tampa, Florida, after chants of “USA” broke out during the show on Sunday.

The band was performing as part of its “Southern Hospitality Tour” when the chant began, reportedly shortly before the group played “She Talks to Angels.” The moment came after a visual displayed on screen that included the band’s Black Crowe character dressed as Uncle Sam.

Robinson responded from the stage, saying, “Thanks for the geography lesson.” As the chanting continued, he added, “I don’t know what you have to be so proud of right now.”

Video obtained by TMZ shows portions of the audience reacting negatively, with some booing during the exchange.

Robinson later confronted the crowd again, saying, “Some of us have real faith. And for those of you f*cking booing us, some of us are not afraid. And we most assuredly are not f*cking ignorant, so thank you,” Robinson said before the band played “She Talks To Angels.”

Over nearly four decades of performing, the Crowes have largely stayed away from overt political commentary in their music. In a recent Mojo interview earlier this year, Chris Robinson summed up that stance: “I’m not interested in politics.”

He went on to expand on that view, while drawing a distinction between politics and personal judgement, saying:“I know what’s right and wrong – and this sh*t going on right now is wrong. Look man, I’m almost 60, alright? I don’t tell anyone what to do, because I don’t like to be told what to do. But I know right and wrong. The world’s teetering on the edge with all this bullsh*t, but if there’s a street fighting man out there, he’s got to be a young man, right? But these kids don’t seem to give a f*ck.”
