California Governor and likely 2028 Presidential hopeful Gavin Newsom took a shot at Vice President JD Vance while speaking at the Center for American Progress Ideas Conference in Washington, DC, on Wednesday, declaring that the VP doesn’t have what it takes to replace Trump in the White House.

Trump, Newsom said, is an “invasive species,” which Trumpism and the MAGA movement can’t survive without. “It’s a cult of personality,” he said, adding, “With all due respect, JD, you don’t have it.”

Newsom went on to deliver a bizarre word salad about what the Democrats need to win the White House in 2028 and how voters are thinking about the future. Oddly, he continued his defense of Biden’s policies, claiming that the economy was “booming” with low inflation and that job creation and unemployment were the best since the 1960s.

He further accused Trump of “wanting to bring us back to a pre-1960s world” with the destruction of LGBTQ rights, women’s rights, and voting rights.

Notably, this comes as the Democratic Party’s 2024 election autopsy, which credits in part the focus on identity politics for Kamala Harris’s loss, was released. They still haven’t learned!

As long as we own up to our own complicity, we’ve been too timid. It’s not about tinkering anymore. It’s not about I doubled the earned income tax credit. If I’m giving that speech, you’re in trouble. It’s not about retraining, and that’s, this is something different. I’m sorry, I don’t know. I’m not going all Elizabeth or Bernie on you, or AOC. Maybe I am a little bit. You know, in terms of understanding that, or all Trump and Trumpism, understanding that, you know it’s, it’s, it’s just, it is remarkable, it’s, you know, and I’ll end on this, I know I got to go. The anxiety is manifesting in real despair for people.

I mean, their pessimism is pretty profound, and that’s, you know, and AI, as I say, is going to detonate that, and so we have to fundamentally understand that, and, and that’s why, as Democrats, I, this is not, you know, I’m not here for forgiveness, but I get why, when I was out there stumping for Biden, and I revere that man, and we’ll have his back till my last breath. I do. And I’ll never regret a day out there, but I was, you know, I was defending the economy’s booming, inflation’s cooling, you know, best jobs market since 1960s lowest unemployment for black women and Hispanics, and talking about industrial policy that’s worker-centered, and the four big, you know, that’s but people weren’t feeling it and, you know, Trump’s making the same damn mistake, and it’s because they weren’t experiencing it. We don’t live in the aggregate, we don’t.

Trump was asked about the comments on Wednesday, where he appeared to shrug off the statement, saying, Vance will “do very well” if he wins the GOP nomination for president.

“We have a lot of very talented people,” he added. “We’re doing a lot, and JD is a very talented guy.”

Trump: Well, look, we’ve done a lot, and JD is very talented. He’s a smart guy. He’ll do very well if it’s, if it’s JD. We have a lot of very talented people. So, I think hopefully we’re going to leave something that’s going to be real easy to run. We’re doing, we’re doing a lot. We’re doing a lot, and JD is a very talented guy.
