United Airlines jumbo jet from Italy clips light pole, damages truck while landing in Newark

A United Airlines jumbo jet flying from Italy struck a light pole Sunday while approaching the Newark, N.J., airport, damaging a tractor trailer but landing safely in the latest harrowing airline safety episode.
United Flight 169 from Venice, Italy, landed “without incident” after striking the light pole on the New Jersey Turnpike while descending into Newark Liberty International Airport, according to the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.
United said the 767 jetliner “came into contact with a light pole” on its final approach to Newark around 2 p.m. but it “landed safely, taxied to the gate normally and no passengers or crew were injured.”
The airline said its maintenance team was evaluating damage to the aircraft. The truck driver was injured but released after treatment, officials said.
The National Transportation Safety Board opened an investigation, seeking access to the cockpit voice recorder and the flight data recorder.
The incident occurred just weeks after a jetliner struck an emergency vehicle at LaGuardia airport New York City.
