Tim Kaine says Virginia’s plan to redistrict conservative congressmen out of office is to ‘stand up’ to Trump

Ahead of Tuesday’s election in Virginia that will see voters cast ballots on a proposed redistricting measure, Democrat Senator Tim Kaine has said that the measure is necessary to have members in Congress who will “stand up” to President Donald Trump.

Fox News Sunday’s Shannon Bream asked Kaine, “Vice President Kamala Harris won by about five percentage points. So the state is relatively split with a left lean, but 90 percent of House members from Virginia being from one party?”

“90 percent of Virginians are not Democrats, that’s true, but about 100 percent of Virginians want election results to be respected. We’re deeply worried that Donald Trump will try to interfere with the election results this November or in 2028, because we saw him do it before. And we have to have a Congress that will stand up to it. In 2021, all five Republicans in Virginia went along with Donald Trump and his effort to overturn election results. And so, we’re giving Virginians a chance to vote, which Republican states have not done, about whether or not they want to have a congressional delegation that will stand up against Donald Trump’s team.

The proposed redistricting map from the Virginia legislature would likely eliminate all but one of the seats currently held by Republicans. Currently, Democrats hold a slim lead of six to five seats in Congress in the current congressional districts.

The ballot question asks voters if they want the General Assembly to “temporarily adopt new congressional districts to restore fairness in the upcoming elections.”

The measure has received strong support from Democratic Governor Abigail Spanberger, who hit the campaign trail over the last weekend of early voting. She wrote on Saturday, “The President said he’s ‘entitled’ to more seats in Congress. Virginia voters have the power to push back. Despite what you may have seen on some mailers or texts with my face on them, I voted YES. And Prince William is fired up to vote YES, too!”
